Our UpCycled Chicken Coop- Day 1

Yesterday I posted about how I want to build an Upcycled chicken coop with pallets. I also wrote that I want a big window and a sound floor, you can see that posts !

Today is the first day of actual work, we found 20 pallets to start building the walls. First step is to pull aside the 6 best pallets we have for the walls. Something with even spacing between the boards and they all have to be the same size, we will call these wall pallets. Second step is to pull aside 5 pallets to cannibalize. Pallets with boards roughly the same size as the gaps on your wall pallets. Take your reciprocating saw with a construction blade and cut the nail between the board and the stringer. Remove all top boards, you will need them to fill in the gaps on your wall pallets. Note: if you are using a cordless reciprocating saw you battery will die very fast. 1 battery lasted 2 pallets.

Next you will need to make sure your cut boards fit in the empty space of the wall pallets. Since they aren’t measured you may need to cut them down a little bit more. I was not a fan of the table saw!!!

So for today we were able to finish 6 pallets

More often than not these mass produced versions are constructed of rapid grown hardwood - come the first decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a door that won't close, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain effort to release the squawking residents. The first cozy day suggests the hardwood dries out and also cracks, the felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the hens choose not to enter. This is not because of their disappointment at the decrease of their as soon as appealing apartment yet because the hovel is now a haven for, and possibly crawling with, the chicken caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly match 4 big hens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as just what are you left with? A few joints and also some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to four birds must cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run attached. Assuming you are varying your birds in a huge room and the pop hole doorway is big sufficient for the type you maintain, after that the major demands of housing boil down to 3 factors which will define the variety of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. Many types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost during the night, this perch must preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off edges so the foot sits comfortably on it. The perch should be higher than the nest box access as chickens will certainly likewise normally search for the acme to perch. A perch lower than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they generate one of the most poo) causing soiled eggs the following day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries might take place when the bird comes down in the morning. Chickens require about 20cm of perch each (in little breeds this is undoubtedly less), plus if more than one perch is installed in the house they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally your home should have a least one nest box for every single three birds as well as these need to be off the ground and in the darkest area of your home. Your home ought to have ample air flow: without it then condensation will build up every evening, even in the coldest of weather condition. Realize, air flow works on the concept of warm air leaving via a high gap attracting cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a set of openings on other wall surfaces of your home as well as at the same degree, this is what's referred to as a draft. If you have a house with a run affixed then the factors above are still real, but you must also take into consideration the run size. The EU maximum legal stocking thickness for a free array bird is (as well as allow's face it, among the motivations for keeping some chickens in your home is perhaps boosted or better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird per 4m squared. Take a close consider a few of the deal residences - it could well be the house has the appropriate perches, right ventilation as well as adequate nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? And so as the claiming goes, "you get what you pay for". You might believe you've grabbed a deal, yet you and your group could rue the day you did. Acquisition the ideal house and it will last for a few decades, otherwise longer offered the proper therapy. Ultimately your poultry as well as your poultry maintaining experience will certainly be considerably the much better for it.
