Landscaping around the Chicken Coop and Run

This is our chicken run just after it was finished. We decided we needed to put something around the run to deter predators from digging underneath. We had some large landscaping stones in another part of our yard where the previous owner had a garden. The stones were imbedded into the ground after years of being there so it took a crowbar to pry them up.

Here are the landscaping stones around the run and surprisingly I had almost enough to go all the way around.

In the front, I put a planter and shade growing flowers. I had a small area where I still needed to fill and I was out of landscaping stones. I found these two concrete blocks that are near the door. Lowe’s sells these for around $1.50 each and they are heavy.

My friend, Michelle, came over to see my chickens and brought me a hen-house sign from Target. I’m still wondering why Target stocked these but it is super cute and the DH tacked it up on the coop.

This lighting idea came from , Rugged-Life.com. I already had two solar lights along the path to the coop since I sometime go to the coop after dark and lock the girls up and tell them goodnight… 🙂 Anyway, the solar lights looked kind of skimpy just standing there. The hole in the clay pots was the perfect size to slide in my solar lights. I think they look a lot better.

This is Stripe doing her chicken acrobatics. She and the other Plymouth Rock are my favorites and I’m always snapping pictures of them.

Have a great weekend!

Blessing….Lucy

More often than not these standardized designs are created of fast grown up wood - come the initial drop of rainfall they swell, leaving you either barricading a doorway that won't close, or ripping the doorway furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking citizens. The initial cozy day indicates the hardwood dries as well as fractures, the really felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the chickens refuse to enter. This is not due to their frustration at the decline of their once attractive property yet due to the fact that the hovel is now a place for, and also most likely crawling with, the fowl keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add on that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly fit 4 big chickens when that equipping thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you entrusted? A couple of joints and some kindling. A good coop for thee to 4 birds should cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could rely on whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a large space and the pop opening doorway is big enough for the breed you maintain, then the major needs of housing come down to three factors which will define the variety of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. A lot of types of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off edges so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch must be above the nest box entrance as chickens will also naturally search for the highest point to perch. A perch below that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they create one of the most poo) resulting in soiled eggs the list below day. They shouldn't however be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries can take place when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is obviously less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in your home they ought to be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors however are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your house needs to have a least one nest box for each three birds as well as these ought to be off the ground and in the darkest location of the house. Your home must have ample ventilation: without it then condensation will build up every evening, also in the chilliest of climate. Be aware, air flow works with the concept of cozy air leaving through a high void drawing cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a collection of holes on contrary wall surfaces of your house and also at the exact same level, this is what's known as a draft. If you have a house with a run connected then the factors above are still true, but you need to also take into consideration the run dimension. The EU maximum lawful stocking density for a totally free range bird is (and also let's face it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some chickens in your home is possibly boosted or much better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m settled. Take a close take a look at a few of the deal residences - it could well be your house has the appropriate perches, right ventilation and also enough nest boxes for an affordable number of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for". You might believe you've got a bargain, but you and your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the ideal house and it will certainly last for a couple of years, if not longer given the right treatment. Ultimately your chicken and your fowl keeping encounter will certainly be a lot the far better for it.
