A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Clawson, Utah Baby chicks are quite cute as well as tough to stand up to, but it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the correct products, but additionally the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you merely should supply them with the following: A tidy and cozy habitat Plenty of food as well as water Focus and love Environment Your habitat could be a basic box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You likewise require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should give them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also function effectively (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could take up to 2 months). The recently hatched out need a temperature between 90 as well as 100 levels, and also each week this can be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The heat source must be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat lamp, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you need to put some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is essential and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to alter the bed linen usually as well as constantly provide tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow very quickly which needs plenty of tidy food and also water. Give sufficient whatsoever times and also examine commonly to prevent thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and enjoy their actions, you could capture ailment or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other unhealthy indications. Be sure to also look at their poop, as diarrhea could lead to matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now totally feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your home and also move outside into a coop.
