Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Waller, Texas Baby chicks are really cute and also hard to resist, however it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not just the appropriate products, but additionally the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you merely should supply them with the following: A clean and cozy environment Plenty of food and water Focus and love Environment Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, and after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You additionally require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you should provide them with a warmth source. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The freshly hatched need a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as weekly this can be reduced by about 5 levels or so. The warmth source need to be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your heat light, you should minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely snuggling), you have to include some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linen commonly and consistently give clean food and water Food and water. Chicks grow really quick which requires plenty of tidy food and also water. Offer enough at all times and also inspect frequently to stop parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not use up that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and enjoy their behavior, you can capture illness or various other problems earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable indications. Make certain to likewise check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and relocate outside right into a cage. Look into our section on chicken coops to read more about coops and correct cage environments.
