We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Sulphur Springs Texas is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Sulphur Springs, Texas Baby chicks are quite adorable as well as difficult to withstand, yet it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not only the right materials, however likewise the appropriate knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you merely should offer them with the following: A clean and cozy environment Plenty of food and water Interest and love Environment Your habitat could be a basic box, fish tank, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of just paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise require something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should offer them with a warmth source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to two months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also weekly this could be decreased by approximately 5 degrees or so. The warmth source ought to get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you need to lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not merely curling up), you need to include some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is key and it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bed linen usually and always give clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quick which needs a lot of clean food and also water. Provide sufficient at all times and inspect often to avoid dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't use up that task up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will probably bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their actions, you can catch ailment or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful indications. Make sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted plumes as well as stopped up cloaca. Lastly, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathered and also its time for them to leave the security of your home and also relocate outside right into a coop. Look into our area on chicken cages to get more information about coops and also appropriate coop habitats.
