A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Santo Texas is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Santo, Texas Baby chicks are quite charming and also challenging to withstand, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by gathering not only the appropriate materials, yet additionally the correct understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you just should provide them with the following: A clean and warm and comfortable environment Plenty of food and also water Interest and love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without any loosened strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You also need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise work extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to 2 months). The newly hatched require a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be minimized by around 5 levels or so. The warmth source must get on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth light, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply curling up), you should add some warmth. Home cleaning Tidiness is key and it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bed linen usually as well as always offer tidy food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks expand extremely fast which calls for plenty of clean food and also water. Supply sufficient in any way times and examine commonly to avoid thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't use up that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Interest and love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will probably bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as enjoy their habits, you can capture disease or other troubles previously. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other harmful signs. Make certain to also look at their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted plumes and also stopped up cloaca. Finally, it is very important to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and relocate outside right into a coop. Take a look at our area on chicken coops to find out more concerning coops and appropriate coop environments.
