On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in San Augustine Texas * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in San Augustine Texas is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in San Augustine, Texas Baby chicks are extremely adorable as well as challenging to withstand, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the appropriate materials, yet also the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you merely have to provide them with the following: A clean and warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food and water Interest as well as love Environment Your habitat can be an easy box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loose strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just newspaper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you should supply them with a heat resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched require a temperature between 90 and 100 degrees, and every week this can be decreased by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource should get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the other edge of your heat light, you have to lower the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply cuddling), you should include some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is essential and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linen commonly and always supply tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks expand quite fast which requires a lot of tidy food as well as water. Provide sufficient whatsoever times and inspect usually to prevent dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will most likely bond with you and also not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their actions, you can capture disease or various other issues earlier. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy indications. Make sure to additionally consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to look out for social issues, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and relocate outside into a coop. Look into our part on chicken cages to learn more concerning cages as well as correct cage habitats.
