Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Purdon, Texas Baby chicks are quite adorable and difficult to withstand, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the appropriate products, however likewise the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely should supply them with the following: A clean as well as warm habitat Lots of food and also water Attention as well as love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Also, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should supply them with a heat resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise work effectively (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could take up to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature between 90 and 100 degrees, and every week this can be minimized by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source need to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth light, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you have to put some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bedding typically and constantly offer clean food and water Food and water. Chicks grow really quickly which requires plenty of tidy food as well as water. Give sufficient whatsoever times and also inspect often to avoid thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to get a head start on taking dirt baths, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Focus as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their actions, you can catch health problem or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable indications. Be sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted plumes and clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and move outside right into a coop.
