Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. How to Care for your new baby chickens in Lockney, Texas Baby chicks are extremely adorable and also challenging to withstand, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the appropriate products, yet also the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you merely should give them with the following: A tidy as well as warm environment A lot of food and water Interest as well as love Habitat Your environment can be a straightforward box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You additionally require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you should provide them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally work extremely well (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 levels, and every week this could be reduced by roughly 5 levels or so. The warmth source ought to be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your heat light, you need to reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not simply cuddling), you should put some heat. Home cleaning Tidiness is essential and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linens often and also constantly supply clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand really quick which requires plenty of tidy food and water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and also check often to prevent thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not take up that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as watch their actions, you could catch disease or various other problems earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable indications. Make certain to also consider their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to watch out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick getting badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as move outside right into a cage.
