A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hedley, Texas Baby chicks are quite adorable and also tough to stand up to, however it's best to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the appropriate products, yet likewise the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you simply have to provide them with the following: A clean as well as warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and also water Focus and also love Environment Your environment can be an easy box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of just paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You also need something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal store. Also, as the chicks get older you can present a perch right into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you have to give them with a heat source. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function very well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to two months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also each week this could be lowered by roughly 5 levels or so. The warmth resource should be on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you should put some heat. Home cleaning Tidiness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bedding often as well as consistently offer clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand very quickly which needs a lot of clean food and also water. Supply enough whatsoever times and also inspect commonly to prevent parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking filth baths, while others will not occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and view their behavior, you could catch illness or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful signs. Make sure to likewise consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to watch out for social problems, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your residence and relocate outside into a coop. Look into our part on chicken coops to get more information about coops and also appropriate cage habitats.
