On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hamilton, Texas Baby chicks are extremely cute as well as difficult to resist, however it's best to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not only the right products, but additionally the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you simply should give them with the following: A tidy and also warm habitat Plenty of food and water Interest and love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You also need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you should supply them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise work extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to two months). The newly hatched need a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as every week this can be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The heat source ought to be on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the other corner of your heat light, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not simply cuddling), you should put some warmth. Home cleaning Sanitation is essential and it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linens typically and consistently give clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quick which calls for a lot of clean food and water. Give sufficient at all times and also examine often to prevent thirsty as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Attention as well as love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as view their habits, you could capture health problem or other issues previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or various other harmful indications. Be sure to additionally check out their poop, as diarrhea could lead to matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick getting teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and move outside into a coop. Take a look at our part on chicken coops to get more information about cages as well as appropriate coop habitats.
