Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Brashear, Texas Baby chicks are extremely adorable and challenging to stand up to, but it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the proper products, yet likewise the proper understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you merely need to offer them with the following: A tidy and also warm environment Plenty of food as well as water Focus and also love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without loose strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch right into the environment to get them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should give them with a heat resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally work extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also weekly this can be minimized by approximately 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource must be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth light, you should reduce the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not simply snuggling), you need to add some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is essential and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to alter the bedding frequently and also constantly offer clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand extremely fast which requires a lot of tidy food and water. Supply sufficient in any way times as well as check typically to prevent thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking dirt baths, while others will not occupy that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their behavior, you can capture illness or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable signs. Make certain to also consider their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is essential to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and also relocate outside right into a cage. Have a look at our section on chicken cages to get more information concerning coops and appropriate coop habitats.
