A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

TNTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Trezevant Tennessee * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Trezevant Tennessee is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Trezevant, Tennessee Baby chicks are extremely adorable as well as hard to stand up to, but it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the proper materials, however additionally the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively simple, you merely need to give them with the following: A clean as well as warm habitat A lot of food as well as water Attention and love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, fish tank, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you have to offer them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise work extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be decreased by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat resource ought to get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the other edge of your warmth light, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you have to add some heat. Home cleaning Sanitation is crucial and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to change the bed linen frequently and also constantly provide clean food and also water Food and water. Chicks expand very quickly which requires a lot of clean food as well as water. Offer sufficient at all times and also check frequently to stop thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others won't use up that activity until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a few advantages to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will more than likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their habits, you can catch ailment or various other troubles previously. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable signs. Make certain to also look at their poop, as diarrhea could lead to matted plumes and also obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is very important to look out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as move outside right into a coop. Look into our area on chicken cages to find out more about cages as well as appropriate coop environments.
