What’s Wrong with My Chickens?

Thanks for stopping by! If you're interested in healthy eating and subscribe to get regular email updates.

I had a recipe to share today, but Elena woke up really early today and changed my usual blogging schedule. But I had a question for any chicken farmers out there. Our chickens have given us no trouble at all, but we have recently noticed them starting to pull out their feathers. We didn’t think too much of it, because it was only here and there. Now they are pulling them out rapidly (this has only happened in the last few days) and they are getting quite scrawny looking. It’s so sad.

What in the world is making them do this?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Smyrna Tennessee * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Smyrna, Tennessee Baby chicks are very charming as well as difficult to resist, but it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the correct products, yet additionally the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you simply have to provide them with the following: A clean and cozy habitat Lots of food and water Interest and also love Environment Your habitat could be an easy box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loosened strings!) to start, and after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to supply them with a heat resource. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also each week this could be decreased by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource need to be on just one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the other edge of your heat light, you have to lower the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you have to add some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to transform the bedding frequently as well as always supply clean food and water Food and water. Chicks expand quite fast which requires a lot of clean food and water. Give enough whatsoever times as well as check typically to stop thirsty as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking dirt baths, while others will not occupy that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as enjoy their habits, you can capture ailment or various other issues previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or various other undesirable signs. Make certain to also check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can result in matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to look out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house as well as relocate outside into a coop. Have a look at our area on chicken coops to get more information about coops and appropriate cage environments.
