A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Gladeville, Tennessee Baby chicks are really cute and difficult to resist, but it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not only the appropriate materials, yet additionally the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you just need to offer them with the following: A clean as well as cozy environment Lots of food as well as water Focus as well as love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without any loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You also require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you have to provide them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally function very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature between 90 and 100 degrees, and each week this can be reduced by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource need to get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the other edge of your warmth light, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you should include some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is essential and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linens typically and consistently provide clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow very fast which calls for plenty of tidy food as well as water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times and also examine usually to stop parched and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't occupy that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Focus and also love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will more than likely bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as watch their actions, you can catch ailment or other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or various other harmful indicators. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted feathers and stopped up cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your house and relocate outside right into a coop. Check out our area on chicken coops for more information about coops and proper coop environments.
