The chickens are eating out of my hand!!!!

Baby steps here.  These chickens need to learn that I am a friendly caring benefactor, and not a scary creepygrabber.  And pretty much the only way into the heart of a chicken is through their stomach.  I’ve started going out to check on them every morning and evening, and giving them treats of some sort, usually a handful of cracked corn.  Over the course of the last several days, they have realized that when I come out to see them, they will be getting treats, and they respond accordingly.  They now walk up to the door of the enclosure and talk at me in quiet little honks.  I have slowly been broadcasting the corn for them closer and closer to myself, and finally yesterday they started eating out of my hand.  I’m aware that I am reaching facebook parent level obsession, but I’m not forcing you to watch the video.  But you know, you can if you want to!

When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Crawford, Tennessee Baby chicks are quite adorable and hard to withstand, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not just the correct products, but also the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you simply should offer them with the following: A clean as well as warm habitat Lots of food as well as water Focus as well as love Environment Your habitat could be a straightforward box, aquarium, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing just paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You likewise need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Also, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you have to give them with a warmth source. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also function very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to two months). The newly hatched out need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as every week this could be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth source need to get on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the other edge of your heat lamp, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not simply curling up), you should put some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is essential as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to alter the bed linen frequently and constantly give clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow really fast which needs a lot of clean food and water. Provide sufficient at all times as well as inspect commonly to avoid parched and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others will not occupy that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Focus and also love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will probably bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also see their actions, you can catch illness or various other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other unhealthy indicators. Make sure to additionally look at their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers and also stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to watch out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your residence and also move outside into a coop. Have a look at our part on chicken coops to read more about cages and proper cage environments.
