Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop Setup in Rapid City, South Dakota

Usually these standardized designs are constructed of quick grown up timber - come the initial decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either fortifying a door that won't shut, or ripping the door furniture off in a vain effort to launch the squawking occupants. The very first warm day means the wood dries out and fractures, the really felt roofing bubbles as well as boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens refuse to go in. This is not because of their dissatisfaction at the decline of their as soon as attractive commercial property yet due to the fact that the hovel is currently a haven for, as well as probably crawling with, the fowl keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add the fact that it claimed on the blurb that it would match 4 large hens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you entrusted? A couple of hinges and some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you choose for a totally free standing house or one with a run connected. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a large space as well as the pop opening doorway allows enough for the type you keep, after that the primary needs of housing come down to three factors which will define the number of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes as well as air flow. A lot of types of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost in the evening, this perch must preferably be 5-8cm large with smoothed off sides so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch should be higher than the nest box access as chickens will likewise naturally look for the acme to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they produce the most poo) resulting in stained eggs the following day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries might occur when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require about 20cm of perch each (in little types this is clearly much less), plus if more than one perch is installed in your home they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally your house needs to have a least one nest box for every three birds as well as these ought to be off the ground and also in the darkest location of your home. Your house must have sufficient air flow: without it after that condensation will accumulate every evening, also in the coldest of weather condition. Know, ventilation works on the concept of warm air leaving via a high gap attracting cooler air in from a lower void - it's not a collection of holes on other wall surfaces of your home and also at the very same degree, this is what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the points above are still true, but you must additionally take into consideration the run dimension. The EU maximum legal equipping density for a free variety bird is (and allow's encounter it, among the inspirations for maintaining some hens in the house is possibly improved or far better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close look at several of the deal residences - it could well be the house has the best perches, appropriate air flow and adequate nest boxes for a practical number of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the claiming goes, "you obtain just what you spend for". You might think you've got hold of a deal, but you as well as your flock can rue the day you did. Acquisition the ideal house as well as it will last for a couple of decades, otherwise longer offered the correct therapy. In the end your poultry and also your poultry maintaining experience will certainly be much the much better for it.
