Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Typically these standardized versions are constructed of quick grown up wood - come the very first decline of rain they swell, leaving you either defending a doorway that will not close, or tearing the doorway furnishings off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking inhabitants. The initial warm day indicates the timber dries as well as splits, the felt roofing bubbles and also boils, as well as come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not due to their disappointment at the decline of their when appealing property yet since the hovel is currently a place for, and also probably abounding, the fowl caretaker's bane, red mite. Add that it claimed on the blurb that it would suit 4 big hens when that stocking density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as exactly what are you left with? A number of joints as well as some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to four birds must cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you choose for a free standing house or one with a run connected. Thinking you are ranging your birds in a huge room and also the pop hole doorway is big enough for the breed you keep, after that the main requirements of housing boil down to three points which will define the variety of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and also ventilation. The majority of types of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch must preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off sides so the foot sits conveniently on it. The perch should be above the nest box entrance as chickens will additionally naturally seek the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they produce one of the most poo) causing dirtied eggs the list below day. They shouldn't nevertheless be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries can occur when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in small breeds this is obviously less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in your house they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally your house should have a the very least one nest box for every three birds and these need to be off the ground and also in the darkest area of your house. The house should have sufficient air flow: without it then condensation will certainly build up every evening, even in the coldest of climate. Be aware, air flow works with the concept of cozy air leaving via a high void attracting cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a set of holes on contrary wall surfaces of the house and also at the exact same degree, this is what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed then the factors above are still real, yet you need to likewise consider the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful equipping density for a totally free variety bird is (and also allow's encounter it, among the motivations for maintaining some chickens at home is possibly boosted or much better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird per 4m squared. Take a close look at a few of the bargain houses - it could well be your house has the ideal perches, correct air flow and also sufficient nest boxes for an affordable number of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the saying goes, "you get what you spend for". You might think you've got a deal, yet you and your group can rue the day you did. Acquisition the best house as well as it will last for a few decades, if not longer provided the right treatment. In the end your fowl and your chicken keeping experience will certainly be a lot the much better for it.
