It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Tatum, South Carolina Baby chicks are extremely charming and challenging to resist, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the right products, but also the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you just have to supply them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food and water Focus and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without any loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You also require something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you have to give them with a heat resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise function very well (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched out need a temperature in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also every week this could be reduced by roughly 5 levels or so. The warmth source need to be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your warmth light, you have to lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you have to put some warmth. House cleaning Tidiness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding commonly and constantly give clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks expand really fast which needs a lot of clean food and water. Provide enough whatsoever times and check usually to avoid parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others won't take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also see their habits, you can catch ailment or various other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted plumes and also stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to look out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your house and relocate outside into a coop.
