On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

SCTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Simpsonville South Carolina * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Simpsonville South Carolina is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Simpsonville, South Carolina Baby chicks are extremely cute and difficult to withstand, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by gathering not only the right products, but additionally the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you merely should supply them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable environment A lot of food as well as water Attention and also love Environment Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You also need something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you should provide them with a warmth source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally work very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The freshly hatched need a temperature level in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as every week this can be reduced by about 5 degrees approximately. The heat source should get on just one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your heat lamp, you have to lower the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not simply curling up), you have to put some warmth. Housekeeping Sanitation is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linen typically as well as always provide tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite quickly which calls for plenty of clean food as well as water. Offer enough whatsoever times and also check usually to stop thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dust baths, while others won't occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Attention and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will probably bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their habits, you can catch illness or other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful indications. Be sure to likewise check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Finally, it is very important to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your home and relocate outside right into a coop. Check out our part on chicken coops for more information about cages and also appropriate coop habitats.
