A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Carlisle, South Carolina Baby chicks are extremely adorable and difficult to stand up to, however it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by collecting not just the right products, yet likewise the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you merely have to offer them with the following: A clean as well as warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and water Interest and love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You also require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Also, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you have to provide them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise work extremely well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can use up to 2 months). The newly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 levels, and each week this can be lowered by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource ought to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth lamp, you should minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you should include some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bedding frequently as well as consistently offer clean food and water Food and water. Chicks expand extremely fast which requires plenty of clean food and water. Offer sufficient in any way times and check typically to avoid parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention and love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will probably bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their actions, you can capture ailment or various other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful indications. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted feathers and clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house and also relocate outside into a cage. Take a look at our section on chicken cages to read more regarding cages as well as correct cage habitats.
