On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

SCTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Blair South Carolina * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Blair South Carolina * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Baby Chickens Names in Blair, South Carolina

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Blair South Carolina is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Blair, South Carolina Baby chicks are quite adorable as well as difficult to withstand, however it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the appropriate materials, yet likewise the proper knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely have to offer them with the following: A clean and cozy environment Lots of food as well as water Interest and love Environment Your environment can be a simple box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only paper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You also need something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should supply them with a heat source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally work extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, as well as every week this can be decreased by approximately 5 levels or so. The warmth resource need to get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your heat lamp, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not just curling up), you have to add some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is essential and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to change the bed linen commonly and also constantly supply tidy food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow very quick which calls for lots of tidy food and water. Give sufficient whatsoever times and inspect commonly to prevent thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dust baths, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Interest and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and see their actions, you could capture ailment or other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other unhealthy signs. Make certain to also take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your home as well as relocate outside right into a cage. Check out our area on chicken cages to find out more concerning coops and proper cage environments.
