Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Fowl housing is a situation in factor. It's likewise a classic instance of the excellent old bandwagon being jumped on as different prospective poultry housing experts peddle a selection of lodging claiming to be the suitable solution to your chicken housing demands. Frequently the cost looks eye-catching, your house looks attractive, heck also the clean-cut family standing there feeding the chickens look eye-catching. Undoubtedly they understand a professional chicken house when they see one? There are many cheap and unpleasant cages swamping the market. I recognize this as I've checked a variety of them in the field, and seen a ewe run directly via one when the feed pail appeared. The result was only a costly pile of fire wood as well as a little group of bemused as well as now homeless bantams. Chickens for sale in Smithfield PA

Typically these mass produced designs are created of rapid grown hardwood - come the very first drop of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a door that won't close, or tearing the doorway furnishings off in a vain effort to launch the squawking residents. The very first warm day implies the wood dries out as well as fractures, the felt roofing bubbles and also boils, and come nightfall the hens refuse to go in. This is not as a result of their dissatisfaction at the decline of their as soon as desirable home yet considering that the hovel is currently a place for, as well as probably abounding, the poultry keeper's bane, red mite. Add on that it stated on the blurb that it would certainly fit four big chickens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you entrusted? A number of joints and some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds should cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could depend on whether you choose for a totally free standing house or one with a run attached. Presuming you are ranging your birds in a large area as well as the pop hole doorway is big enough for the breed you maintain, after that the major needs of real estate boil down to three points which will define the variety of birds your home will hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. A lot of breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost at night, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off edges so the foot rests conveniently on it. The perch ought to be more than the nest box entry as chickens will certainly likewise naturally search for the highest point to perch. A perch lower than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they create one of the most poo) causing dirtied eggs the list below day. They should not nonetheless be so high off the floor of your house that leg injuries could possibly take place when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in small types this is clearly much less), plus if greater than one perch is installed in your house they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors however are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably the house needs to have a least one nest box for every 3 birds as well as these must be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of your home. Your home must have adequate air flow: without it then condensation will certainly build up every night, also in the chilliest of climate. Realize, ventilation works on the principle of cozy air leaving through a high space drawing cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a collection of openings on opposite wall surfaces of your house as well as at the very same degree, this is what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run connected after that the factors above are still true, yet you must additionally take into consideration the run dimension. The EU maximum lawful equipping thickness for a complimentary array bird is (as well as let's encounter it, among the inspirations for maintaining some chickens at home is perhaps enhanced or much better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m made even. Take a close look at a few of the deal residences - it could well be your home has the best perches, proper air flow as well as sufficient nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the claiming goes, "you obtain just what you pay for". You could believe you've got hold of a deal, but you and your group can rue the day you did. Purchase the appropriate house as well as it will last for a few years, if not longer offered the right treatment. In the end your fowl and your poultry maintaining experience will certainly be a lot the much better for it.
