Here are our baby chickens waiting to be moved into our new Chicken Coop. They need to stay in the house under a heat lamp until they are 5 weeks old. If you want to raise your own then make sure you use a red bulb in your heat lamp. A white light will be reflected in their eyes and chickens peck at anything that shines.

The chicken coop framing is very simple and is entirely just common 2×4 wood fastened with decking screws.

Here is the chicken coop floor made entirely of common 2×4 wood pieces cut to the specific size you need.

The coop panels are just common outdoor siding used on a shed. It costs $15 for a 4×8 sheet at any home improvement store. We designed it to have screened in doors on the sides that could be opened and closed for ventilation.

We cut the 4×8 sheet of wood siding lengthwise and screwed in the rear piece with 1″ drywall screws to the frame. We then attached the front section to the back with common piano hinges.

We cut the chicken door with a common circular saw and finished it with a reciprocating saw. The door that we used is fastened to the frame with regular door hinges.

Here we are screening in the ventilation doors.

The coop ladder is made from our leftover 1×1 wood pieces we had after framing the door.

Here is one of the chicken nesting boxes we built. We are going to have 6 in all when finished.

Here is a nice natural perch we added. We cut it from our tree and trimmed it down and attached it with decking screws.

We leveled out our coop with $1.50 pavers. The ventilation doors are held closed with corner clasps.

Ventilation doors open. Project done and completed it cost less than $250. (We will fence and screen in the area around our coop before the chickens move in)

More often than not these mass produced designs are constructed of fast grown up wood - come the initial decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either fortifying a door that will not shut, or tearing the door furnishings off in a vain effort to launch the squawking occupants. The very first warm and comfortable day suggests the lumber dries out and also fractures, the really felt roof bubbles as well as boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens refuse to go in. This is not because of their disappointment at the decline of their when attractive property however since the hovel is now a place for, and also probably crawling with, the poultry caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add that it said on the blurb that it would certainly suit 4 large chickens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also what are you left with? A number of hinges and some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you around ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run affixed. Thinking you are ranging your birds in a big area and also the pop hole doorway is big enough for the type you keep, then the main needs of real estate come down to 3 factors which will certainly define the variety of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and air flow. The majority of types of chicken will perch when they go to roost at night, this perch must preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off sides so the foot sits comfortably on it. The perch needs to be more than the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly likewise naturally look for the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they create the most poo) causing stained eggs the list below day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries could possibly occur when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in small breeds this is undoubtedly less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in your house they should be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your house needs to have a the very least one nest box for every 3 birds and also these ought to be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of your home. Your home needs to have sufficient ventilation: without it then condensation will certainly build up every evening, also in the coldest of weather. Understand, air flow works on the concept of cozy air leaving with a high gap drawing cooler air in from a reduced space - it's not a set of holes on other walls of your home and at the same level, this is exactly what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the points above are still true, but you should additionally think about the run size. The EU optimum lawful equipping thickness for a free range bird is (and also let's face it, among the inspirations for keeping some hens in the house is possibly improved or much better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m settled. Take a close consider some of the bargain homes - it could well be the house has the ideal perches, appropriate air flow and also enough nest boxes for a practical variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the stating goes, "you obtain just what you spend for". You might believe you've grabbed a bargain, but you and also your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the appropriate house as well as it will last for a few decades, otherwise longer offered the proper therapy. In the end your poultry as well as your chicken maintaining encounter will certainly be considerably the far better for it.
