Chicken Coop Photos from Tacoma, Washington

Check out this email Sydney from Tacoma sent in about her chicken coop. My favorite is the hand washing station they included. I’m totally going to have to steal that idea. Here’s what she had to say:

Hi Mavis! I stumbled across your blog right before Christmas (shamelessly did a Google search for what to give your chickens for Christmas). We are still weathering our first year as chicken newbies (other adjectives would be obsessed, hoarders, chick mama, etc.) and I was looking to see what others did, and admittedly to see if I was crazy. I giggled when I saw that you were also from the Puget Sound area, and did have treat ideas!

I had only wanted 3 [chickens], and my husband told me he wanted nothing to do with them, but loved me so he helped me out anyway. Our 3 girls quickly grew from just Brahmas and an Orpington, to Silkies, an EE and a Bantam something or other, and we reached our allowed limit. Needless to say, we love them. They are crazy and silly and give me the stink eye when I haven’t talked to them at least a dozen times during the day!

We built our coop this year using cedar siding.  We made the mistake, however, of not having real plans and just winging it, so there may have been an easier way to do things. But the girls are happy and safe now, and that’s all that matters.

Without a huge sprawling yard, we wanted something that would be appealing right off the patio, and also attractive for our beloved neighbors to see from their yard well.  Still learning and changing things up to address the good ol muddy clay we get over here in winter.
And yes, we made an outdoor hand washing station to drain into a bucket, and that white thing on the coop run door is a hand sanitizer station like they use in hospitals. Can you tell I used to work in a hospital?
Cheers,
Sydney

What to look for when buying a chicken coop in Lake Lynn, Pennsylvania With the huge increase in poultry maintaining there has been a just as large increase in the array of chicken stuff on sale. Fowl real estate is a situation in point. It's also a classic instance of the great old bandwagon being got on as various would-be poultry real estate specialists pitch an array of holiday accommodation declaring to be the excellent remedy to your chicken real estate requirements. Commonly the rate looks desirable, your diy-chicken-coop-planshome looks appealing, hell even the clean-cut family standing there feeding the chickens look desirable. Certainly they recognize a high quality chicken house when they see one? There are many cheap as well as nasty cages swamping the market. Generally these mass produced models are constructed of fast grown wood - come the very first decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either barricading a doorway that will not shut, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain attempt to release the squawking citizens. The initial warm and comfortable day indicates the timber dries out as well as cracks, the really felt roofing system bubbles and boils, and come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not as a result of their disappointment at the decrease of their when attractive building yet due to the fact that the hovel is currently a haven for, and probably abounding, the fowl keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add on the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would certainly suit four big hens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you entrusted? A couple of joints and also some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you around ₤ 300 though this can rely on whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run attached. Thinking you are varying your birds in a large area and the pop hole doorway is big enough for the breed you maintain, then the primary needs of real estate come down to 3 points which will specify the number of birds the house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and also ventilation. A lot of types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost at night, this perch should preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off edges so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch must be higher than the nest box entrance as chickens will also normally try to find the acme to perch. A perch lower than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they create the most poo) causing dirtied eggs the list below day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries can occur when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is certainly less), plus if more than one perch is installed in your house they must be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably your house must have a the very least one nest box for each 3 birds and these must be off the ground and in the darkest location of the house. The house needs to have ample air flow: without it then condensation will build up every evening, even in the coldest of climate. Know, air flow works with the concept of warm air leaving via a high space drawing cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a collection of holes on opposite walls of your home and at the same level, this is exactly what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the points above are still real, yet you should also think about the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful stocking thickness for a totally free array bird is (and allow's face it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some hens in the house is possibly enhanced or better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m squared. Take a close consider some of the bargain homes - it could well be your home has the ideal perches, correct air flow and enough nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you obtain just what you pay for". You may believe you've got hold of a deal, yet you as well as your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the ideal house as well as it will last for a few years, if not longer provided the right therapy. In the end your fowl and your fowl maintaining experience will be much the far better for it.
