Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop Construction in Duncansville, Pennsylvania

Usually these standardized designs are built of fast grown wood - come the very first drop of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a doorway that will not shut, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking inhabitants. The initial cozy day means the wood dries out and splits, the really felt roofing system bubbles and boils, and come nightfall the chickens refuse to enter. This is not because of their disappointment at the decline of their once eye-catching commercial property but since the hovel is now a sanctuary for, as well as probably abounding, the chicken keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would fit four huge hens when that equipping density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you left with? A number of joints and also some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you around ₤ 300 though this could depend on whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run affixed. Presuming you are ranging your birds in a big area and the pop hole door allows enough for the breed you maintain, after that the main needs of housing boil down to three points which will certainly define the number of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes and air flow. The majority of types of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off sides so the foot sits easily on it. The perch ought to be more than the nest box entry as chickens will certainly additionally normally search for the acme to perch. A perch lower than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they produce one of the most poo) resulting in stained eggs the following day. They shouldn't however be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries could happen when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in small breeds this is obviously less), plus if more than one perch is mounted in the house they should be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors however are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally your house should have a least one nest box for each three birds and these should be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of the house. The house must have sufficient ventilation: without it then condensation will certainly accumulate every evening, even in the chilliest of weather condition. Know, ventilation works with the principle of warm air leaving through a high void drawing cooler air in from a lower void - it's not a collection of openings on opposite walls of your house and at the very same level, this is just what's called a draft. If you have a house with a run connected then the factors above are still real, yet you must also think about the run size. The EU optimum legal stocking density for a complimentary array bird is (and also let's encounter it, one of the motivations for keeping some chickens in the house is perhaps improved or better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m made even. Take a close check out some of the deal residences - it could well be the house has the appropriate perches, proper ventilation as well as adequate nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the stating goes, "you obtain just what you pay for". You might believe you've got hold of a bargain, yet you as well as your group can rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house and it will last for a couple of years, if not longer given the correct therapy. Eventually your poultry and your fowl keeping experience will be much the much better for it.
