Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Generally these standardized designs are built of quick grown timber - come the very first drop of rainfall they swell, leaving you either blockading a door that won't close, or ripping the door furniture off in a vain effort to launch the squawking occupants. The first warm day suggests the hardwood dries out and also splits, the felt roof covering bubbles and boils, and come nightfall the chickens choose not to enter. This is not because of their disappointment at the decrease of their when desirable commercial property but because the hovel is currently a haven for, and most likely crawling with, the poultry keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add on the fact that it said on the blurb that it would match 4 huge hens when that equipping density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you left with? A few hinges as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run connected. Thinking you are varying your birds in a big space as well as the pop hole doorway allows enough for the breed you maintain, after that the major requirements of real estate boil down to three factors which will certainly specify the number of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. Many types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost in the evening, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm large with smoothed off edges so the foot rests pleasantly on it. The perch ought to be more than the nest box entry as chickens will certainly likewise normally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch below that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they produce one of the most poo) bring about soiled eggs the following day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries might occur when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in little types this is undoubtedly much less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in your home they need to be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably the house ought to have a the very least one nest box for each 3 birds as well as these ought to be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of the house. Your home ought to have adequate ventilation: without it then condensation will develop every evening, also in the chilliest of weather. Realize, ventilation works with the principle of warm air leaving via a high void attracting cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a set of holes on other walls of your home and also at the exact same degree, this is exactly what's referred to as a draft. If you have a house with a run affixed then the points above are still true, however you ought to also think about the run size. The EU maximum lawful stocking density for a cost-free variety bird is (as well as allow's encounter it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some chickens in your home is potentially improved or far better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m squared. Take a close look at a few of the bargain homes - it could well be your home has the appropriate perches, correct air flow and also enough nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the saying goes, "you get what you spend for". You may assume you've grabbed a deal, but you and also your flock can rue the day you did. Purchase the right house as well as it will last for a couple of years, if not longer given the correct treatment. Ultimately your chicken and also your chicken keeping experience will be much the better for it.
