Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Zullinger Pennsylvania * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Zullinger Pennsylvania is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Zullinger, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are really cute and hard to stand up to, yet it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the right materials, but likewise the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely need to supply them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy habitat Lots of food as well as water Interest and love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loose strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You likewise require something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you can present a perch into the habitat to get them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally function extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can take up to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also weekly this can be lowered by roughly 5 degrees or so. The heat source need to get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you have to reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you need to add some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is crucial and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linens usually and also always give tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks expand quite quickly which needs a lot of clean food and also water. Provide sufficient in any way times and also examine typically to stop dehydrated and starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust baths, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly probably bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their behavior, you could catch ailment or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other unhealthy indications. Be sure to likewise check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Finally, it is essential to look out for social issues, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathery as well as its time for them to leave the security of your house and also move outside into a coop. Have a look at our part on chicken coops to find out more about cages and also correct coop habitats.
