A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

PATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Treichlers Pennsylvania * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Treichlers Pennsylvania is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Treichlers, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are really charming as well as difficult to withstand, but it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not only the correct products, yet additionally the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly basic, you just have to supply them with the following: A tidy and also warm and comfortable environment Plenty of food and water Interest as well as love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You additionally require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Also, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you need to offer them with a heat source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could use up to two months). The newly hatched need a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, and also every week this can be reduced by about 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source must get on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth light, you need to reduce the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you should add some heat. Housekeeping Cleanliness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linens typically and also consistently provide tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quick which requires lots of clean food as well as water. Give sufficient whatsoever times and also examine commonly to prevent parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Interest and also love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you as well as not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as enjoy their habits, you can catch ailment or various other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful signs. Make sure to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now totally feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and also relocate outside into a cage.
