A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Meadow Lands, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are extremely cute and tough to stand up to, but it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the right materials, but likewise the proper expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you simply have to give them with the following: A tidy and also warm and comfortable environment A lot of food as well as water Focus and love Habitat Your environment can be a straightforward box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Also, as the chicks age you can present a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you have to supply them with a heat resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise work very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can use up to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also each week this could be reduced by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource need to get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the other corner of your heat light, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not simply cuddling), you should add some heat. Home cleaning Tidiness is vital as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bed linens frequently and also constantly supply clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite quick which calls for lots of clean food and water. Offer enough in any way times as well as inspect commonly to stop parched as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others will not take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their habits, you could capture illness or various other problems earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make sure to additionally check out their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted feathers and blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as move outside right into a cage.
