Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are very adorable and hard to stand up to, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by compiling not just the correct products, however also the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you simply need to offer them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food and water Focus as well as love Habitat Your habitat could be a straightforward box, fish tank, pet cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You likewise need something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you should give them with a heat resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could take up to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as each week this can be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The heat source ought to be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your heat lamp, you should minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not simply cuddling), you have to include some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is key and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to alter the bed linens usually and also always offer tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow extremely fast which calls for lots of tidy food and water. Give sufficient at all times and examine usually to stop thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not take up that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Attention and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their behavior, you can catch ailment or other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable signs. Make sure to additionally check out their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted plumes and obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home as well as move outside into a coop.
