A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

PATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Hermitage Pennsylvania * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Hermitage Pennsylvania * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Hermitage Pennsylvania is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hermitage, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are very cute and tough to stand up to, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the correct materials, yet also the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you just should offer them with the following: A tidy and also cozy environment Lots of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You likewise require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the environment to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to give them with a warmth resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb also work effectively (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could take up to two months). The freshly hatched require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also every week this could be lowered by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource ought to be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the other corner of your warmth lamp, you have to lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not merely curling up), you should include some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bedding usually and constantly supply tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand really quick which requires a lot of tidy food and also water. Provide enough in any way times as well as inspect commonly to prevent thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others will not use up that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Attention as well as love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also enjoy their behavior, you can catch ailment or other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy indications. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea could result in matted feathers and also clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your residence and relocate outside right into a coop. Check out our part on chicken cages to find out more about coops as well as correct coop habitats.
