Corgis and Chicks: Baby Belina

The second in our “Corgis and Chicks” series features my special little lap chicken, Belina II. Belina the first was my “lap hen” back in Austin, and we’ve decided to always have a Buff Orpington named Belina in our flock. Baby Belina is proving to be as sweet as her namesake, happy to cuddle or eat from our hands. I can’t wait to pat her for years to come! (She gets a pardon from any culling in the future and will live to her natural demise.)

Big ears and little – alert and listening.

Pocket is so sweet with her kisses…. though i know her real motivation is the ‘snacks’ that our chickens deposit with frequency. So gross.

Buff Orpingtons are awful sweet! at my Etsy shop – no poop included!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in East Waterford Pennsylvania * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in East Waterford, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are extremely adorable as well as challenging to resist, yet it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the right products, but additionally the correct understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you just need to offer them with the following: A tidy and also warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and also water Interest and love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You likewise require something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you need to give them with a heat resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise work extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to two months). The newly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and 100 degrees, as well as every week this can be reduced by approximately 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource need to be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat light, you should minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not merely snuggling), you should add some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linens usually and also consistently offer tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quick which needs a lot of tidy food as well as water. Supply sufficient at all times as well as inspect typically to avoid dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dirt baths, while others won't occupy that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their actions, you could catch disease or other problems previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or various other harmful indicators. Make certain to also check out their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers and blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and also move outside into a coop. Look into our part on chicken cages to read more regarding coops as well as appropriate coop habitats.
