Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are very charming and also challenging to resist, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the proper products, yet likewise the appropriate knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you simply need to supply them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy habitat Plenty of food and also water Attention and also love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loose strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to give them with a warmth source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb also function very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could use up to two months). The recently hatched require a temperature level between 90 as well as 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be minimized by approximately 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource should get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you have to minimize the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to add some heat. Home cleaning Tidiness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linens often as well as consistently supply tidy food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks grow really quickly which requires plenty of clean food and also water. Give sufficient whatsoever times and check typically to prevent dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also enjoy their behavior, you can capture ailment or various other troubles previously. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other undesirable signs. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted plumes as well as clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is essential to watch out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence and move outside into a cage. Look into our section on chicken coops to find out more about cages as well as correct coop environments.
