Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Terrebonne, Oregon Baby chicks are extremely cute and challenging to resist, however it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not just the right materials, however likewise the correct expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you simply have to offer them with the following: A clean and also cozy environment Plenty of food and water Attention and love Environment Your environment could be a simple box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could present a perch into the environment to get them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you need to give them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise work effectively (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could take up to two months). The recently hatched require a temperature between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and every week this could be minimized by approximately 5 levels or so. The heat source need to get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you have to decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not merely curling up), you have to add some warmth. House cleaning Cleanliness is vital and it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to alter the bed linen commonly as well as consistently offer clean food and also water Food and water. Chicks expand really fast which needs lots of clean food as well as water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and inspect typically to stop dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust baths, while others will not use up that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention and love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their behavior, you can capture illness or other issues previously. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other undesirable indications. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted plumes and obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and relocate outside right into a coop. Take a look at our part on chicken coops to learn more about cages and also proper coop habitats.
