On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

ORTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Fairview Oregon * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Fairview Oregon is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Fairview, Oregon Baby chicks are extremely charming as well as hard to resist, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the appropriate products, yet likewise the proper understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively simple, you merely have to supply them with the following: A tidy and also cozy habitat Lots of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your habitat could be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing only paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Also, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat resource. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally work extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature level in between 90 and 100 degrees, and weekly this could be decreased by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat resource should get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to include some heat. Home cleaning Cleanliness is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bedding often as well as consistently supply tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quick which requires lots of clean food and also water. Supply sufficient in any way times and also check frequently to avoid thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not take up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention and love There are a few advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their behavior, you could capture health problem or other issues previously. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable signs. Be sure to also consider their poop, as diarrhea could result in matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and move outside into a coop. Have a look at our part on chicken coops to learn more concerning coops as well as correct cage habitats.
