A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Chelsea, Oklahoma Baby chicks are very cute and also difficult to withstand, however it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the proper materials, yet also the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you just need to supply them with the following: A clean and also cozy habitat Plenty of food as well as water Interest and love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, fish tank, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal store. Also, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should offer them with a warmth source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function effectively (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to 2 months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level between 90 and also 100 levels, and also weekly this can be lowered by around 5 levels approximately. The heat resource should get on just one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth light, you should reduce the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply curling up), you have to include some warmth. House cleaning Tidiness is crucial and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linens usually and consistently offer clean food and also water Food and water. Chicks expand quite quick which calls for a lot of tidy food and water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times and check usually to stop thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking dirt baths, while others won't use up that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Attention and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their actions, you could catch ailment or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or various other undesirable signs. Make sure to additionally look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as move outside into a cage. Have a look at our part on chicken cages to find out more concerning coops and also proper coop habitats.
