Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop You Can Walk In in Willard, Ohio

Typically these standardized versions are constructed of fast grown wood - come the initial decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either barricading a doorway that won't shut, or ripping the doorway furniture off in a vain effort to release the squawking inhabitants. The first warm day implies the timber dries out as well as fractures, the felt roof bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the chickens refuse to enter. This is not as a result of their disappointment at the decrease of their when eye-catching residential property but since the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and most likely crawling with, the fowl caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add the fact that it said on the blurb that it would match 4 big hens when that equipping thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you left with? A number of joints and also some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to four birds ought to cost you around ₤ 300 though this can rely on whether you choose for a cost-free standing house or one with a run connected. Presuming you are varying your birds in a large area and also the pop opening door is big sufficient for the type you keep, then the main needs of housing come down to 3 points which will define the variety of birds the house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. The majority of types of chicken will perch when they go to roost in the evening, this perch needs to ideally be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off edges so the foot sits conveniently on it. The perch must be higher than the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly additionally normally search for the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they create the most poo) bring about dirtied eggs the list below day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries can happen when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is certainly much less), plus if more than one perch is mounted in your house they ought to be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally the house should have a least one nest box for each 3 birds and these must be off the ground as well as in the darkest location of your house. Your house needs to have adequate ventilation: without it then condensation will certainly accumulate every night, even in the coldest of climate. Know, air flow works with the concept of warm air leaving via a high void drawing cooler air in from a reduced space - it's not a collection of openings on other walls of your house and also at the very same level, this is what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the factors above are still true, but you should also consider the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful stocking density for a complimentary array bird is (and allow's encounter it, among the motivations for maintaining some hens in the house is potentially enhanced or much better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m made even. Take a close consider some of the bargain houses - it could well be the house has the ideal perches, proper air flow and sufficient nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the stating goes, "you get what you pay for". You might think you've grabbed a bargain, but you and your flock could rue the day you did. Purchase the ideal house and also it will certainly last for a few decades, if not longer offered the right treatment. Ultimately your chicken and also your fowl maintaining experience will be considerably the better for it.
