Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Poultry housing is a situation in point. Commonly the price looks attractive, the house looks eye-catching, hell even the clean-cut family standing there feeding the chickens look attractive. More often than not these mass produced versions are built of quick grown lumber - come the first decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either blockading a door that will not shut, or ripping the doorway furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking residents. The initial cozy day indicates the wood dries out as well as cracks, the really felt roof bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the chickens choose not to enter. This is not as a result of their dissatisfaction at the decline of their once appealing building however since the hovel is now a haven for, and also most likely crawling with, the poultry keeper's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it said on the blurb that it would certainly match four big chickens when that equipping thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you left with? A few hinges and some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could rely on whether you elect for a complimentary standing house or one with a run connected. Presuming you are varying your birds in a big area and also the pop hole door allows enough for the type you keep, after that the primary needs of real estate come down to three factors which will define the number of birds your home will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and also ventilation. Most breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost at night, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch must be above the nest box entry as chickens will certainly additionally naturally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they produce one of the most poo) causing soiled eggs the list below day. They shouldn't nonetheless be so high off the floor of the house that leg injuries could possibly occur when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny types this is undoubtedly less), plus if greater than one perch is set up in your home they need to be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally your home ought to have a the very least one nest box for every three birds as well as these need to be off the ground as well as in the darkest location of your house. The house ought to have ample air flow: without it then condensation will develop every night, also in the coldest of climate. Know, ventilation works with the concept of warm and comfortable air leaving via a high space drawing cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a collection of openings on opposite wall surfaces of the house and at the same degree, this is just what's called a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the points above are still real, but you ought to also take into consideration the run dimension. The EU maximum legal equipping density for a totally free array bird is (and also allow's face it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some chickens in the house is perhaps enhanced or far better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m squared. Take a close take a look at a few of the deal homes - it could well be your home has the best perches, appropriate ventilation and also ample nest boxes for a sensible number of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the stating goes, "you get just what you pay for". You could assume you've got hold of a deal, but you as well as your group could rue the day you did. Acquisition the best house and it will certainly last for a couple of years, if not longer given the right treatment. In the long run your poultry as well as your chicken maintaining encounter will certainly be a lot the far better for it.
