On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

NDTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Tolna North Dakota * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Tolna North Dakota * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Tolna North Dakota is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Tolna, North Dakota Baby chicks are very charming and also challenging to withstand, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the proper materials, yet likewise the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you simply need to provide them with the following: A tidy and cozy environment Lots of food and also water Focus as well as love Habitat Your habitat can be a simple box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You also require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Also, as the chicks age you could present a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can use up to two months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature level between 90 and also 100 degrees, and every week this could be lowered by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource must get on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your heat light, you should lower the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you should include some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linen usually as well as consistently offer tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quickly which requires a lot of tidy food and water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times and check frequently to avoid dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to get a head start on taking filth baths, while others won't take up that task up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also view their habits, you could catch health problem or other problems previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other harmful indications. Make certain to additionally take a look at their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers as well as stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also move outside into a cage. Check out our area on chicken coops for more information about cages and correct coop habitats.
