Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

What to look for when buying a chicken coop in Sylva, North Carolina With the significant increase in chicken keeping there has been a similarly big rise in the array of chicken materiel on sale. Fowl real estate is a case in point. It's also a timeless example of the good old bandwagon being jumped on as various potential fowl real estate specialists market an array of accommodation claiming to be the optimal solution to your chicken housing requirements. Typically the rate looks appealing, the house looks appealing, hell even the clean-cut family standing there feeding the chickens look appealing. Undoubtedly they know a high quality chicken house when they see one? There are many low-cost and horrible coops swamping the market. I know this as I've tested a number of them in the area, and seen a ewe run directly through one when the feed bucket showed up. The result was just an expensive stack of firewood as well as a little flock of bemused and also now homeless bantams. Chickens for sale in Sylva NC

Typically these standardized designs are created of fast grown up timber - come the initial decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a door that will not shut, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking residents. The initial warm day means the hardwood dries out as well as splits, the felt roofing bubbles and also boils, and also come nightfall the chickens refuse to go in. This is not because of their disappointment at the decrease of their once eye-catching residential property yet considering that the hovel is currently a haven for, as well as possibly crawling with, the chicken caretaker's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly suit 4 huge chickens when that equipping density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also exactly what are you left with? A number of joints as well as some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend on whether you choose for a cost-free standing house or one with a run attached. Presuming you are varying your birds in a large area and the pop opening doorway allows sufficient for the breed you maintain, after that the major needs of real estate boil down to 3 points which will certainly define the number of birds your home will hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. A lot of types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost in the evening, this perch needs to preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot sits comfortably on it. The perch ought to be above the nest box access as chickens will certainly also naturally look for the acme to perch. A perch less than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they create the most poo) leading to soiled eggs the list below day. They shouldn't nevertheless be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries could possibly happen when the bird comes down in the morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny types this is obviously less), plus if more than one perch is mounted in the house they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your house ought to have a least one nest box for every single 3 birds and these should be off the ground and in the darkest area of the house. The house must have appropriate ventilation: without it then condensation will certainly accumulate every night, even in the coldest of climate. Realize, air flow works on the concept of warm air leaving with a high space attracting cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a set of openings on contrary walls of your home and at the same level, this is just what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run connected after that the points above are still true, yet you should additionally take into consideration the run size. The EU maximum legal stocking density for a totally free array bird is (and also let's face it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some hens in the house is potentially boosted or much better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird per 4m settled. Take a close look at some of the bargain homes - it could well be your home has the right perches, correct air flow and enough nest boxes for an affordable number of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the stating goes, "you obtain what you pay for". You may assume you've got a deal, however you and also your flock might rue the day you did. Purchase the best house and it will last for a couple of decades, if not longer provided the right treatment. In the end your chicken as well as your poultry keeping encounter will certainly be a lot the far better for it.
