A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Penland, North Carolina Baby chicks are very charming and tough to resist, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not only the appropriate products, yet likewise the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely have to give them with the following: A clean and also cozy environment Lots of food and water Interest as well as love Environment Your habitat could be a straightforward box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using only newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You additionally need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you have to offer them with a heat resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The recently hatched out require a temperature between 90 and 100 degrees, and every week this can be reduced by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat source need to get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you should minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you should add some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is essential and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linens frequently and also always supply tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite quickly which needs a lot of clean food and water. Provide enough in any way times and examine frequently to avoid thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Focus and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their actions, you could catch ailment or other issues earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other unhealthy indications. Make certain to also consider their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers and stopped up cloaca. Lastly, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and also relocate outside into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken coops to get more information concerning cages and also correct cage habitats.
