Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Bunnlevel, North Carolina Baby chicks are extremely cute and difficult to withstand, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the proper materials, however likewise the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly basic, you merely should offer them with the following: A clean as well as cozy habitat A lot of food and water Interest and also love Environment Your environment can be an easy box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loose strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid using just paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should provide them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be lowered by roughly 5 levels or so. The heat source need to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the other edge of your heat light, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you should add some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is key as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bed linen usually and constantly supply tidy food as well as water Food and water. Chicks expand quite quick which needs plenty of tidy food as well as water. Provide sufficient whatsoever times as well as examine frequently to avoid thirsty as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a head start on taking filth baths, while others won't use up that task up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and see their behavior, you can capture disease or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other undesirable signs. Be sure to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers as well as stopped up cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to look out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as relocate outside into a cage. Look into our part on chicken coops to learn more concerning coops and correct cage habitats.
