A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Westdale New York is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Westdale, New York Baby chicks are quite adorable and challenging to resist, yet it's best to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not just the right materials, yet additionally the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you simply need to give them with the following: A clean and cozy habitat A lot of food and also water Attention and also love Habitat Your habitat can be an easy box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch into the environment to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched need a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also each week this can be minimized by about 5 levels or so. The warmth source ought to get on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you need to lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not just snuggling), you need to include some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is vital and it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to alter the bed linens usually as well as always offer clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow quite quick which requires a lot of clean food and water. Provide enough at all times and also examine frequently to prevent dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't use up that activity till they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Attention and love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will most likely bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their actions, you could catch disease or various other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other harmful indications. Make sure to likewise look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted feathers and also clogged up cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick getting picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house as well as move outside into a cage.
