On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

How to Care for your new baby chickens in West Haverstraw, New York Baby chicks are really charming as well as challenging to stand up to, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the right products, however also the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you just need to supply them with the following: A clean and cozy environment Plenty of food and also water Interest as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, fish tank, cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loosened strings!) to start, and after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You likewise need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you need to give them with a heat resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally function very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 levels, and also weekly this could be decreased by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source ought to get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are hiding in the other corner of your warmth light, you should minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not just curling up), you have to include some warmth. House cleaning Cleanliness is key as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linen typically and also consistently offer tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quick which needs a lot of clean food and also water. Provide enough in any way times and also check commonly to prevent parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others won't occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Interest and also love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also enjoy their habits, you could capture illness or other problems earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other undesirable indicators. Be sure to additionally check out their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Finally, it is very important to look out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathered and its time for them to leave the safety of your home and also move outside right into a cage. Take a look at our part on chicken cages to find out more about coops as well as appropriate coop environments.
