Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Troupsburg, New York Baby chicks are extremely cute as well as difficult to resist, yet it's best to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the correct materials, but likewise the appropriate expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you just need to provide them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable environment Plenty of food and water Focus as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a simple box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You additionally require something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you could present a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you have to supply them with a heat resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also work extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as each week this can be decreased by approximately 5 levels approximately. The heat resource ought to get on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat lamp, you have to decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you should include some warmth. Home cleaning Cleanliness is vital as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bed linen typically as well as consistently give tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which needs lots of tidy food and also water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times as well as inspect often to avoid parched and hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to get a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus as well as love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will probably bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their behavior, you can catch illness or other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indications. Be sure to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Finally, it is essential to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your house and also move outside into a coop. Take a look at our area on chicken coops to find out more regarding coops as well as correct coop habitats.
