Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Plattekill, New York Baby chicks are very charming and difficult to withstand, but it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the right products, yet additionally the proper expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you merely have to supply them with the following: A tidy as well as warm habitat A lot of food as well as water Attention and love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid using only paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You also need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal store. Also, as the chicks get older you can present a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you should supply them with a heat source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can use up to two months). The recently hatched need a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also weekly this can be lowered by around 5 levels approximately. The heat resource must be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not simply cuddling), you need to put some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is essential and it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bed linens frequently and consistently give clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand very quick which needs plenty of tidy food and water. Offer enough at all times and inspect usually to prevent parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not take up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Attention and love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their behavior, you can capture illness or various other problems earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable signs. Be sure to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as move outside into a coop. Have a look at our part on chicken coops to read more concerning cages as well as proper cage habitats.
