On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Minerva New York * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Minerva New York is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Minerva, New York Baby chicks are really cute as well as tough to resist, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the right materials, but likewise the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you simply have to supply them with the following: A tidy as well as warm habitat A lot of food and water Focus as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, fish tank, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You additionally require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you need to give them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could take up to 2 months). The recently hatched out need a temperature between 90 and 100 degrees, and also every week this can be minimized by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat lamp, you have to lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you should add some warmth. Home cleaning Tidiness is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linen typically as well as constantly provide clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow really quickly which requires plenty of clean food and also water. Supply enough in any way times and also examine typically to prevent parched and hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't take up that task till they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you as well as not flee as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their behavior, you could catch health problem or other problems previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make certain to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Finally, it is very important to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your home and move outside right into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken cages to find out more concerning coops and also appropriate coop environments.
