A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hauppauge, New York Baby chicks are extremely cute and also hard to resist, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the appropriate products, however additionally the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you just need to offer them with the following: A tidy and also warm environment Plenty of food and also water Attention as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without loose strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you should supply them with a warmth resource. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function very well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature between 90 and 100 levels, and also each week this could be minimized by roughly 5 levels approximately. The warmth source must get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the other corner of your warmth light, you should reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not simply curling up), you need to put some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is essential and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bed linen typically and consistently provide tidy food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow really quick which requires a lot of tidy food and water. Give enough whatsoever times as well as inspect commonly to prevent thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't occupy that task up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Focus and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you and also not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and enjoy their behavior, you could catch health problem or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other unhealthy signs. Make sure to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick getting badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your house and also move outside into a cage.
