On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Hammond New York * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Hammond New York is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hammond, New York Baby chicks are really charming as well as difficult to resist, but it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the appropriate materials, but likewise the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you simply need to provide them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy habitat Plenty of food as well as water Focus and love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of only newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally need something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a pet store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you have to supply them with a warmth resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also work very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The newly hatched need a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be decreased by around 5 levels approximately. The warmth source must be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you have to lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not just cuddling), you should include some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is essential and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to change the bedding usually and always supply clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow really quick which calls for lots of tidy food and also water. Supply enough whatsoever times and examine commonly to stop parched and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others will not occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also watch their habits, you can capture disease or other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other harmful indications. Make certain to likewise take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted feathers and obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now totally feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence and also relocate outside right into a coop. Have a look at our section on chicken coops for more information about coops and proper cage habitats.
